Make the Most of Your Summer
The year is already halfway through, and if you find yourself behind on your objectives, now is your chance to catch up before the year end hustle catches you.
As a business owner or manager, it's crucial to regularly assess your progress and make necessary adjustments to stay on track with your goals.
The summer season presents a unique opportunity to revitalize your efforts and accelerate your progress. In this article, we will explore how you can leverage the summer to turn your aspirations into achievements by creating positive habits, implementing a concrete action plan, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Reflecting on Your Goals
Before diving into the strategies for making the most of the summer, take a moment to reflect on the goals you set at the beginning of the year.
- What were your ambitions, and what milestones did you hope to achieve?
- Identifying any gaps between your current progress and desired outcomes will provide valuable insights for the road ahead.
Make your goals measurable:
- This can be as easy from 1-10: where are you now, where do you want to be?
- Note down what you need to do to close the gap.
- Note down what is holding you back.
- How can you mitigate those obstacles?
- Do you need help and from whom?
Transforming Shoulds into Musts
Merely "wanting" to achieve your goals won't be enough to propel you forward. It's time to turn those "shoulds" into "musts."
By attaching a sense of urgency and commitment to your objectives, you will be more motivated to take consistent action.
What do you have to do to be the person who will achieve those goals?
For me that meant changing my daily routines. This was hard in the beginning, and I had to force myself but once it became a routine, it started to be easy and even enjoyable because it is great to experience progress. I also have a vision board on the wall, so I see it each time I walk by. If I feel low energy, I look at my vision board that reminds me of my why. This is my quick “energy refill” when I visualize the benefits and rewards of accomplishing my goals and let them become the driving force behind my efforts.
If you are leading a team, you can also create a team vision. This can be something like “we want to be on the cover of a certain magazine as the best xyz team”.
Focus on Creating Habits
Did you know that it takes approximately 66 days to create a new habit? This finding stems from a study conducted by researchers at University College London. In this study, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, participants were asked to perform a specific behavior daily and record their progress over time. The researchers found that, on average, it took approximately 66 days for the behavior to transition from a conscious effort to an automatic habit.
While the duration may vary depending on the individual and the complexity of the habit, the 66-day timeframe provides a useful guideline for those looking to incorporate new habits into their lives.
It's important to note that consistency is key during this period. By repeating the behavior consistently for around two months, you allow your brain to create new neural pathways and solidify the habit loop. The initial phase may require conscious effort and discipline, but with time, the behavior becomes automatic, requiring less mental energy and willpower.
Consider a marathon runner preparing for a race. They don't wake up one day and run 26.2 miles effortlessly. Instead, they build up their endurance and strength through consistent training over weeks and months. Each day, they lace up their shoes and commit to running a specific distance or completing a targeted workout.
In the business world, small, consistent habits work in a similar way.
Start small and identify one specific habit that will have a significant impact on your progress. For example, a business that aims to enhance its customer service experience could - rather than attempting to revolutionize the entire customer support system overnight - focus on a small, but impactful habit. Encourage your customer service team to dedicate a few minutes each day to personalized follow-up emails or calls with customers who recently interacted with your company. This simple habit builds rapport, shows genuine care, and strengthens customer relationships.
Initially, the impact of this daily habit may seem incremental. However, as your team consistently engages in personalized follow-ups, you begin to witness the ripple effect. Customer satisfaction increases, positive word-of-mouth spreads, and customer loyalty grows. Over time, this small habit can result in a significant boost in customer retention rates, brand reputation, and overall business growth.
The Power of a Concrete Action Plan
A vague idea of what you want to achieve is not enough. To make significant progress towards your goals, you need a concrete action plan. Break down your objectives into actionable steps with specific deadlines. Assign responsibilities to team members, track progress regularly, and adjust as needed. Summer provides an ideal opportunity to refine your action plan and ensure everyone is on the same page.
Time is the most valuable resource. Assess your daily tasks and commitments, and determine which ones contribute directly to your goals. Prioritize those tasks, delegate where possible, and eliminate non-essential activities. By focusing your energy on high-impact tasks, you'll maximize productivity and move closer to your objectives.
As summer unfolds, seize the opportunity to reignite your progress towards your 2023 goals. Remember, the smallest shift can make a significant difference. An article with the tools I use to help me fulfil my goals will come at a later point. Let me know if you are interested.
