Hustle Hard, Shine Bright!
You might have heard of those so-called overnight success stories. However, the road to success is not a quick and effortless one. There’s a whole lot of relentless commitment, unseen hustle and grind involved behind those shiny victories.
In this article we're going to spill the beans on what it really takes to make you and your business shine - the hustle, the risks, and the determination.
1 The Hidden Grind: Appreciating the unseen work
While some businesses may seem like overnight successes, the reality is that they are often the product of years of unseen effort. There is an untold story of dedication, perseverance, and hard work behind the shiny facade of success. Like athletes, entrepreneurs must work in the shadows, facing obstacles and uncertainties without immediate recognition or support from others.
Consider a now-thriving startup that began with a passionate entrepreneur working tirelessly from the kitchen table. Countless late nights, an absolute focus on their customers, and relentless marketing and product development were the building blocks of their eventual success. It's like an iceberg - you only see the tip of the flourishing business, but there's a whole lot more dark work beneath the surface that brought it to life.
Ask yourself:
- Are you willing to sacrifice going out, taking another vacation, or binge-watching Netflix to focus on your business goals and put in the hard work required for success?
- Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone, not feeling comfortable doing the work, getting negative feedback, and keep pushing forward driven by your ambition to develop your skills and identity?
- Can you stay committed even when there are no immediate rewards or praises?
2 The Desire to Shine and the significance of staying the course
In business, the desire to shine often takes the form of innovation, disruptive ideas, or the pursuit of market dominance. The ambition to make a lasting impact is the driving force behind many entrepreneurial journeys. However, as the desire to shine grows, so does resistance and opposition.
Imagine an entrepreneur with a groundbreaking idea for sustainable packaging. The road to success is filled with challenges, gaining industry recognition to overcoming skepticism about the viability of the product. They gotta convince people, get funds, and prove the naysayers wrong. It's like going through an obstacle course, but those who keep pushing, driven by their desire to make a difference, often find their way to success.
Same is true for scaling a company: When a small business transforms into a multinational corporation, people often see it as a meteoric rise. Yet, countless hours of strategic planning, risk assessment, and team building go into successfully scaling a company. It is the unsexy work of building a solid foundation that allows the business to expand rapidly.
Ask yourself:
- How do you handle challenges and obstacles that come your way? Are you willing to push through and find solutions?
- What steps are you taking to stand out and make a lasting impact in your industry?
- How do you stay focused and committed to your business goals, even during tough times?
- What are you doing to build a strong foundation for your business's growth and success?
- Where can you seek advice and learn from experienced entrepreneurs or mentors?
- How do you handle failure or negative feedback, and how does it impact your determination?
3 One inch out of control: Play to win and not to avoid a loss
I recently listened to an interview with Anthony Truck about embracing risk and playing to win.
He is a former NFL player turned motivational speaker and coach and shared valuable insights into the mindset required to overcome adversity and achieve greatness.
When asked why some athletes get stuck in their journey, Truck emphasizes the importance of putting one's dreams out into the world. By sharing their ambitions, athletes hold themselves accountable and step out of their comfort zone. Instead of playing it safe and playing not to lose, Truck urges athletes to play to win, to take calculated risks, and to be willing to venture one inch out of control.
If you play not to lose, you play closer to the chest, you play reserved and safe. Everyone who plays one inch riskier, can achieve a higher return. By playing not to lose, you are limiting your full abilities. Play one inch out of control, which is not very out of control.
Ask yourself:
- How can you play one inch out of control?
- What steps can you take to venture one inch out of control and embrace a more daring approach to achieve higher returns?
- How could you be a little bit loose but not too loose? How can you establish the balance between being loose enough to take risks and still maintaining control over your decisions and actions?
- What are some specific areas in your business where you can be a little more daring and push the boundaries without going too far out of control?
- What strategies can you implement to ensure that playing to win becomes a part of your business culture and decision-making process?
Evolving Identity: The Power of the 2mm Shift
In the business context, the 2mm shift means making small but strategic changes that can lead to significant results. It's all about those tiny tweaks in your business strategy that can add up and make a huge impact down the line. The same is true for your identity and beliefs as a business owner.
To really get the importance of dark work in business, you need to look and understand your own beliefs and business identity.
Ask yourself:
- Are you a Dabbler, just testing the waters of success but shying away from the hard work?
- Or maybe a Defender, guarding your comfort zone, unwilling to take risks?
- Or are you a Go-Getter, fueled by ambition, ready to conquer the challenges and reach success?
If you are the person who wants to shine and make a mark in your industry, guess what? The greater your ambition, the more challenges you'll face. But don't let that stop you! Grab those opportunities, stay the course, and remember, it might not be celebrated at first, but it's all part of the journey to success. So keep practicing and keep doing more! You will become a different person through the dark work, so when the light of success finally shines, it's all yours!
So, the next time you see a successful athlete or business, remember all the effort that went into their "overnight success." Think about the hours of unseen hustle, the unglamorous moments, and the times when they didn't have support. Success is a continuous process of growth and evolution, and you've got the power to make it yours too!
