Take the Time to Reflect
The holiday season is an opportunity to reflect on the past year and step into 2024 with confidence. Taking the time to look back on the year that's passing and forward to the one that's coming can get you deeper insights and guide your decisions and actions for the year ahead:
- Assess Progress: Reflecting on your personal life and business's development over the past year allows you to see how far you've come.
- Identify Challenges: Reflecting on the past year helps you have a clearer look on challenges, obstacles, and setbacks. Recognizing these issues is the first step toward finding solutions and avoiding similar problems in the future.
- Set Clear Goals: Reflection enables you to set clear, realistic goals for the upcoming year. These goals can serve as a roadmap, helping you stay focused and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Improve Decision-Making: When you take the time to reflect, you gain a deeper understanding of what worked and what didn't.
- Enhance Adaptability: Reflecting on the past year also helps you adapt to changing circumstances. You can identify trends and shifts in the market, allowing you to adjust your strategies.
Asking Meaningful Questions
This are my routine of questions that I go through every year:
- What is the best thing I accomplished in the last 12 months?
- What gave me energy, what did cost me energy?
- What do I want to improve or enforce, what do I want to get rid of?
- Where am I today as compared to 12 months ago?
- What is important to me in the next 12 months?
- What is the one most important step I want to take in the next year?
- What is my motto for the year 2024?
- Who and what do I need to achieve my goals?
Here are my 6 Power Questions to take me even a step further on my reflection:
1 What is my strongest belief? What will it take to change the mind about it?
2 What do I know now that I wish I had known 5 years ago?
3 How can I do less but better?
4 Am I hunting antelope or field mice?
5 What actions was I engaged in 5 years ago that I cringe at today?
6 What would my 80-year-old self say about my choices today?
Look at the Major Areas of Your Life
I then begin to list the major areas of my life:
- Health/Wellbeing – everything related to health, fitness, nutrition, sleep, learning, me-time
- Family/Friends/Close Relationships – everything related to the people who are the closest to my heart
- Financial Situation/Planned Investments – anything that generates wealth, necessary investments, financial goals and planning
- Meaningful Work and Income Generation (Business/Job) – anything I work on that generates income and significantly increases the amount of meaningful work; learning
- Social Impact – volunteering, giving back, e.g. mentoring, lecturing, supporting my network, etc.
Set SMART Goals
For each of these areas I set SMART goals:
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals provide clear direction for your business. Define goals that align with your vision and break them down into actionable steps.
